Strain in the tibial and plantar nerves with foot and ankle movements and the influence of adjacent joint positions.

چکیده
We studied the influence of different positions in neighboring joints on strain in the tibial and plantar nerves during ankle and toe movements. Tibial nerve strain at the ankle was measured during ankle dorsiflexion in ten cadavers; plantar nerve strain was measured during toe extension. Tibial nerve strain increased with ankle dorsiflexion (mean increase: 3.9%) and strain was higher when the nervous system was pretensioned by either knee extension or hip flexion (p < or = .011). Strain was even higher when the nerve bed was elongated at both the hip and knee (p < or = .006) before performing dorsiflexion. A similar trend was observed for the plantar nerves with ankle positioning. In conclusion, the change in nerve strain is strongly influenced by positions in neighboring joints. This insight into nerve biomechanics provides a foundation for progressive mobilization exercises for disorders such as tarsal tunnel syndrome.

The Effects of Modified Ankle Foot Orthosis on balance in Healthy Older People
Introduction: Balance impairment and related injuries are common in elderly and patients with neurologic disorders. Ankle foot orthosies can influence on balance via improvement of movement disorders. Therefore the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of modified ankle-foot orthosis on balance performance in healthy elderly. Materials & Methods: The research was conducted on ten ...
متن کاملDesign and Evaluation of an Articulated Ankle Foot Orthosis with Plantarflexion Resistance on the Gait: a Case Series of 2 Patients with Hemiplegia
Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) have been described to have positive effects on the gait biomechanics in stroke patients. The plantarflexion resistance of an AFO is considered important for hemiplegic patients, but the evidence is still limited. The purpose of this case series was to design and evaluate the immediate effect of an articulated AFO on kinematics and kinetics of lower-limb joints in str...
متن کاملMeasurement of tibial nerve excursion during ankle joint dorsiflexion in a weight-bearing position with ultrasound imaging
BACKGROUND The ability of peripheral nerves to stretch and slide is thought to be of paramount importance to maintain ideal neural function. Excursion in peripheral nerves such as the tibial can be measured by analysis of ultrasound images. The aim of this study was to assess the degree of longitudinal tibial nerve excursion as the ankle moved from plantar flexion to dorsiflexion in a standardi...
متن کاملTreatment of the Mirror Foot with Central Ray Resection: Report of 2 Cases
The mirror foot is a rare congenital foot anomaly which is often associated with 6- to 8-toed polydactyly. Postaxial polydactyly is the most common form of this anomaly, while central polydactyly is seen infrequently. We report on 2 cases of the central mirror-foot anomaly. Calcaneus duplication and fibular hypoplasia were present in 1 case. We treated both patients by resecting the middle foot...
متن کاملEffects of the Custom Mold with a Raised Ridge around the Perimeter Foot Orthoses on Dynamic Postural Control in Chronic Ankle Instability
Background and Objectives: Among the foot orthoses prescribed to improve postural control in chronic ankle instability, foot orthoses designed to affect both types of mechanical and functional instability have a limited research background. In the present study, a type of foot orthosis named the custom mold with a raised ridge around the perimeter was designed, and manufactured, and its effect ...
